Calendula Soothing Balm

Botanical balm

Four ingredients, one of which took a month to make.

$3250 gSuitable for sensitive skin
1

A jar of dried calendula petals, covered by two centimetres of high linoleic sunflower oil, left somewhere warm for three to four weeks. That infusion is the whole product. Everything after it is structure.

Shea for body, beeswax for firmness, a few drops of vitamin E to keep the oil honest. Smooth a thin layer over dry areas. Scoop with dry fingers and it will keep for a year.

The formula

  • Calendula Calendula officinalis

Dried petals steeped in sunflower oil for three to four weeks, then strained through muslin. Dried only, because water grows mould.

  • Sunflower, high linoleic Helianthus annuus

The carrier we infuse calendula into. Neutral enough to disappear behind the petals.

  • Shea butter Butyrospermum parkii

Unrefined, melting just under body temperature. It carries the structure of every butter we whip.

  • Beeswax Cera alba

The firmness dial. Ten percent gives a soft salve, fifteen a firm balm, twenty a solid stick.

  • Vitamin E Tocopherol

An antioxidant for the oils. It is not a preservative and we never treat it as one.

How to use it

Smooth a thin layer over dry areas as needed.

Keeps for

12 months once opened. Anhydrous, so it carries no preservative. Scoop with dry fingers.

Before you use it

For external use only. Calendula is in the daisy family, so patch test if ragweed or chamomile bother you. Discontinue if irritation occurs.
